Childish Gambino performs this year's only show, announces last Gambino album
Childish Gambino did not just perform on the second night of Governors Ball 2017. He owned it.
Every inch of stage, all three jumbotrons and the undivided attention of a crowd of thousands belonged to rapper and singer-songwriter Donald Glover for his first and only show of this year.
Gambino took to the stage in a bright white jumpsuit and matching headband, supported by a small orchestra of musicians and several backup singers, ready to perform. And after he announced that this would be his only performance as Childish Gambino this year, he said that he was going to leave everything on the stage. And did he ever.
Gambino performed a mix on his oldest and newest hits: from hit tracks on his album "Awaken, My Love!" to true oldies like "World Star" and "Sweatpants" from "Because The Internet," the latter of which he said was for the realest of fans.
Childish Gambino's energy, dancing from one end of the stage to another, radiated toward the crowd like the lights from the projection behind him. He was truly enjoying himself and the crowd reciprocated so much so that at one point he said, "You guys were exactly what I needed tonight."
After half a set of endless dancing and the continuous flow of excitement from the stage to the crowd, Gambino rolled down his jumpsuit to perform shirtless for the rest of the night.
His voice was impeccable, especially when he sang "Redbone," the most popular song from his most recent album. He built up the Top Ten hit with a five-minute monologue about how he likes to spend Saturday nights in the city at house parties, mixing just the right tunes. Redbone, Gambino said, is the perfect song to make out to when the party ends and you're with the right person.
And after more than an hour-long set, "Redbone" was how Childish Gambino ended the night.
He thanked the crowd, thanked the city and then said "I'll see you for the last Gambino album," marking a near end to his six-year long career as a rapper.
