Rutgers to hold two Climate Task Force Town Hall events in November
University President Jonathan Holloway sent a University-wide email on Friday announcing two upcoming virtual Climate Task Force Town Hall events.
The Nov. 11 event will focus on carbon neutrality at the University and the Nov. 12 event will focus on climate resiliency at Rutgers, according to the email. Attendees must register beforehand, and both events will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Daily Targum previously reported that the President’s Task Force on Carbon Neutrality and Climate Resilience published an interim report over the summer as they work toward their final action plan.
Holloway said he discussed the interim report as well as the steps to developing a final report with the co-chairs of the task force, Robert Kopp, a professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and director of the Institute of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, and Kevin Lyons, associate professor of professional practice at Rutgers Business School at Rutgers–Newark and associate director of the Rutgers Energy Institute, according to the email.
“As stated in the report, the purpose of the task force is to develop Rutgers’ strategies for contributing to achieving global net-zero carbon dioxide emissions and for enhancing the capacity of the University and the State of New Jersey to manage the risks of a changing climate,” Holloway said, according to the email.
The task force is divided into working groups researching transportation, energy and buildings, food systems, supply chain and waste management, land use, climate preparedness and climate-positive economic development, the Targum reported.
Holloway said these groups will share their findings and seek feedback from the community, according to the email. Attendees will hear presentations from the working groups, ask questions and participate in breakout sessions.
“I strongly encourage you to take part in the University’s vital work on climate action by attending these town halls,” Holloway said.
