Kierra Sanderlin commits to Rutgers women's basketball
The Rutgers’ women’s basketball team added All-Texas guard Kierra Sanderlin to its list of commits. Sanderlin had signed a National Letter of Intent earlier in the signing period and will join the Scarlet Knights for the 2021-22 academic year.
Sanderlin is a three-time District All-Academic selection, a Texas state champion and has helped lead her Judson High School team to the state’s semifinals in all three of her seasons at the school. Last season, Sanderlin was named District MVP (Most Valuable Player) and earned back-to-back First Team All-District honors and consecutive Express News Super Team honors.
"We signed one of the overall best players in the country and one of the top guards in the 2020 recruiting class," said head women’s basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer. "Not only did we get a great player, but also an outstanding young woman. (Sanderlin) gives our team flexibility as she is capable of playing multiple guard positions."
Sanderlin averaged 16.7 points per game last season and recently reached the 1,000 point milestone. The guard averaged three steals and 2.5 assists per game and scored 544 points during the state championship run.
"Coach Triva Corrales at Judson has done a tremendous job developing (Sanderlin), who has also participated in one of the top AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) programs in the country, the San Antonio Finest," Stringer said.
Ranked 13th in the country for her position, Sanderlin brings a strong presence to the guard position with an average of five rebounds per game in her three seasons with Judson.
Sanderlin took to Twitter to confirm her commitment to Rutgers, saying she is blessed and grateful.
"Next year, we will have graduated three seniors, so the players we sign are expected to step up and replace these three young ladies immediately. As soon as (Sanderlin) steps foot on campus, she will help us continue our winning ways," Stringer said.
