Rutgers women's soccer defeats Minnesota 1-0
The Rutgers women's soccer team played host to Minnesota yesterday, the last home game of the season for the Scarlet Knights (6-1-1, 6-1-1). The finale would be a successful one, as the home team emerged victorious in a 1-0 battle.
As the seniors received recognition for their contribution to the women’s soccer program over the past several years, Rutgers looked to extend their winning streak against the Golden Gophers (3-3-2, 3-3-2), who was coming off a 3-0 loss to No. 11 Penn State on March 18.
The first half began with four combined fouls and three combined corner kicks within the first 20 minutes of play, but it ended totaling 45 minutes of no goals after one period. Each team totaled one shot apiece, with the Knights putting the only one on goal.
Megan Plaschko denied a chance from senior forward/midfielder Amirah Ali at 23:43, while junior goalkeeper Meagan McClelland didn’t have to move an inch through the first half.
At 47:02, freshman midfielder Sara Brocious would assist a goal from fellow freshman midfielder Julianne Leskauskas that rifled its way into the top left corner for the Knights to score. The goal would be Leskauskas' first as a Rutgers player, while Brocious picked up her third assist of the year.
In the second half alone, Minnesota would total six shots, all three corners in the half, and 5 out of their 9 fouls of the game. McClelland made two saves in the second half to seal the win.
The Knights finished their last home game of the season with a victory, as they look to continue their success on the road the rest of the way.
Rutgers will go on to play at Nebraska on Thursday at 1 p.m. The team's last road trip of the season ends on April 3 after three away games.
