The New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) is currently investigating the discharge of a paintball gun during an aggravated assault, according to a University-wide email alert.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the fifth and sixth wards of New Brunswick.

The victims, who are unaffiliated with the University, reported that they were walking on sidewalks in the city when they were hit by paintballs, according to the email.

The paintballs were reportedly discharged from a passing vehicle and caused the victims to receive non-life-threatening injuries, after which they refused medical attention.

The NBPD said that the descriptions of the vehicle and perpetrators are currently limited and requests that anyone with information or who may have been in the area at the time of the incident contact its detective bureau, according to the email.

The Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) said that students should take safety precautions, including avoiding isolated areas, walking in groups when traveling during late-night hours and staying alert to surroundings.

The RUPD also reminded the community that they provide students, faculty and staff with escorts to vehicles, campus residences or the University’s mass transit system upon request, according to the email.
