Office of Information Technology reports ongoing phishing email scam attacking Rutgers users

Yesterday, the Rutgers Office of Information Technology alerted members of the community of an ongoing phishing email scam via a University-wide email alert.

The emails have been targeting members of the Rutgers community in order to capture sensitive login credentials. 

The phishing emails can be recognized because they originate from non-Rutgers email accounts and mention known University employees in the email body, according to the email.

In addition, the perpetrators sent out fake job-recruiting emails in order to steal personal information from recipients.

Anyone who responded to the phishing emails should change their passwords immediately and contact the Office of Information Technology help desk, according to the email. If students or faculty notice these emails in their inboxes, they should avoid opening them and instead report the suspected scam.

If personal information is believed to have been compromised, managers and supervisors should be informed in order to determine the potential consequences on the department, according to the email.
