At approximately 5:41 p.m. on Wednesday, the Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) responded to a call at the Douglass Parking Deck to aid Aldo Ruiz-Galindo, a 20-year-old male from New Brunswick, who reported that he suffered a gunshot wound to a lower extremity, according to a University-wide email.

Ruiz-Galindo, who is unaffiliated with the University, initially reported that the injury took place multiple blocks away, but the RUPD’s investigation revealed that the wound was self-inflicted and that it occurred within the Douglass Parking Deck while he was alone in his vehicle.

The injury was not life-threatening, and Ruiz-Galindo was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He is currently in police custody facing multiple criminal charges for the incident, including possession of a weapon and "false report to law enforcement authorities," according to the email.

The RUPD said that anyone who has more information or who may have been in the area at the time should contact the RUPD detective bureau as the investigation is ongoing.

The RUPD also said students should take reasonable safety precautions, such as staying alert to their surrounding circumstances, reporting suspicious activity, avoiding dark or isolated areas and walking in groups when traveling during late hours.
