No. 10 Rutgers women's soccer ties with No. 8 Northwestern

After a 1-0 win over Maryland on Sunday, the Rutgers women’s soccer team tied with Northwestern 1-1 in Evanston, Illinois, tonight. The No. 10 Scarlet Knights (10-1-1, 2-1-1) came from behind to tie with the No. 8 Wildcats (9-1-2, 3-0-1) in the second half.
For the second time in three games, Rutgers conceded the 1st goal of the contest. In the 9th minute, Aurea del Carmen blasted a shot past graduate student goalkeeper Meagan McClelland on the low left side of the goal. This put the Knights down 1-0 within the first 10 minutes of the contest.
With the strike, Rutgers conceded a first-half goal before the 10-minute mark for the second straight road game. Last Thursday against Penn State, Ally Schlegel beat McClelland in the 9th minute of the then-No. 17 Nittany Lions’ (7-2-2, 2-1-1) 2-0 win.
As the Knights trailed 1-0 in the first half, Rutgers did not register a shot until junior forward Allison Lowrey missed a chance wide of the net in the 19th minute. From there, the Knights totaled three shots while Northwestern put up three of its own in the first half, including the goal from del Carmen.
After 45 minutes, Rutgers trailed 1-0, putting the Knights down after one period for the fourth time this season.
Rutgers answered quickly into the next 45-minute frame. In the 48th minute, Lowrey capitalized on the Knights’ first offensive chance of the half with a shot that beat past Mia Raben to tie the game at 1-1.
Her 7th of the season, Lowrey scored the goal off a feed from junior midfielder Sara Brocious, who tallied her sixth assist of the year. Brocious had now registered at least 1 point in 3 of the last 4 games.
The Wildcats continued the offensive pressure after Rutgers tied the game. Although Northwestern did not score in the second half, the team put up 11 shots throughout the remainder of the game.
The Knights finished the game with seven second-half shots and 10 in total, with two shots on goal during the matchup. Meanwhile, the Wildcats totaled 14 shots and recorded six shots on goal in the contest.
Rutgers and Northwestern each received their first ties in Big Ten play the season with this being the first time all season that the Knights tied with an opponent all season.
Rutgers now travels to take on Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Sunday. Kickoff will be at noon and will be broadcasted on Big Ten Network+.
