NBPD investigates consecutive sexual assaults in New Brunswick residence
The New Brunswick Police Department (NBPD) is currently investigating two separate criminal sexual assaults that occurred in New Brunswick, according to a University-wide email alert.
The incidents occurred on consecutive days, October 29 at approximately 3 a.m. and yesterday at approximately 2 a.m., within the same residence on Central Avenue.
In regard to both incidents, preliminary investigation suggests that an unknown male perpetrator entered the residence through an unlocked window and sexually assaulted victims who were sleeping inside, according to the alert.
During the first incident, a University-affiliated female victim reported that she was sleeping in her residence when touched inappropriately by an unknown man.
The victim sustained injuries that were not life-threatening as a result of this encounter, and descriptions of the perpetrator are currently limited, according to the alert.
During the second incident, a female victim, who is also affiliated with the University, was sleeping in her residence when she was awoken by a male perpetrator who was sexually assaulting her.
The perpetrator then fled on foot in an unknown direction after being chased from the residence, according to the alert. The victim sustained an injury that was not life-threatening as a result of the incident.
The suspect was described as a male with brown skin who was approximately 5-foot-8 and was wearing a yellow hooded sweatshirt at the time of the incident.
The second incident was reported to the police before the first incident was reported, and the NBPD asks that anyone who may have been nearby at the time of the incidents or anyone with information contact their detective bureau.
The Rutgers University Police Department (RUPD) said that the department will be increasing the presence of public safety officials in the off-campus area following these incidents.
The RUPD also reminded students to ensure that windows and doors are kept closed and locked and to report suspicious activity and individuals immediately.
