The Rutgers field hockey team dropped both games in its trip to the Midwest this weekend, getting shut out in both games. The No. 21 Scarlet Knights (6-6, 2-3) fell to both Indiana and Iowa, dropping them to less than .500 in conference play this season.

Rutgers dropped the first game of the road trip on Friday in Bloomington, Indiana. Going into the matchup, the Hoosiers (8-5, 1-2) had not beaten a ranked team all season.

Indiana got the first shot on goal of the game in the second quarter, with the first being mostly controlled by the Knights but the ball stayed mostly within the midfield. Sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Howard was able to kick the shot out, keeping the teams equal and scoreless going into the halftime break.

In the third, Rutgers took control again, outshooting the Hoosiers 3-0. Despite the team's efforts, the Knights could not get any shots past Indiana’s Arabella Loveridge. The game stayed scoreless once again.

The Hoosiers finally struck in the last 7 minutes of the game. Indiana earned a penalty corner in the bottom half of the fourth and were able to break through for a score. Less than 3 minutes later, the Hoosiers were awarded another penalty corner that was executed by Yip van Wonderen. They closed out the contest, finishing a 2-0 shutout.

Rutgers was held scoreless again today by the No. 3 Hawkeyes (9-2, 3-1).

Iowa was outshot by the Knights 4-2 in the first period, with Rutgers controlling much of the early action, but the Hawkeyes were the first to strike. In the final minutes of the first, Leah Zellner got past Howard on a shot from just inside the circle

The contest stayed scoreless for the rest of the match with the Knights unable to break through the Iowa defense. Howard recorded four saves, but the offense couldn’t put an attack together.

Rutgers has only a handful of games left in the regular season with a match against Northwestern coming up this Saturday. The program only faces one opponent next weekend when it hosts the No. 2 Wildcats (10-2, 1-2) at the Bauer Track and Field Complex on Livingston campus.

Northwestern had an impressive eight-game winning streak to start the season but struggled at the beginning of conference play with losses to the Hawkeyes and No. 4 Maryland.

The Knights will take on the Wildcats on Saturday at noon in Piscataway with live stats available on StatBroadcast.
