Are these Oscars 'champagne carpet' looks in vogue or fashion faux pas?

Last Sunday, before the 95th Oscars ceremony, celebrities took to the "champagne carpet" to show off their best looks before the big show. Most of the outfits from the night were stunning, but not all hit the mark. Here are some of the stars that have claimed their spots on my list of best and worst-dressed looks.

Cara Delevingne

Delevingne is making her comeback after a few years away, and what better way than wearing a striking red Elie Saab gown to make a statement? With a slit that could break hearts and a perfect mix of fine tailoring and drapery, Delevingne looked sensational. Her old Hollywood makeup, sleek updo and matching jewelry rightfully earned her a spot on the best-dressed list.

Angela Bassett

Bassett looked captivating in her regal, award-show-ready, purple Moschino mermaid gown. She was equipped with jewelry and hair parted to the side, both resembling old Hollywood glamour, which seems like a theme that inspired many stars on the carpet this year.

Paul Mescal

It’s always difficult to talk about red carpet looks for men because they often stay in their comfort zone of plain black tuxedos. But Mescal got it right. With flared black pants, a white jacket and the simple touch of a rose on his lapel, it seemed like Mescal was offering an ode to 70s fashion that was truly well received — at least by me. While it may not be as creative as some of the dresses we've seen, it suited him well and managed to be outside of the box without being too daring.

Michelle Yeoh

Now Best Actress winner Yeoh looked youthful as ever on the carpet. Her custom white Dior gown took more than 200 hours to make, with an additional 450 hours of work for its embroidery. It truly was worth it, though, as it made Yeoh look like an angel gracing the carpet. To accessorize, Yeoh's design team chose a white headband and sparkly silver jewelry, making her seem more like a princess than ever.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

While I don’t hate it, I also don’t love it. When someone has swag status like The Rock does, no look is that bad. Still, his shiny pink jacket with black pants was a miss for me. The look was not the best outfit for matching the champagne carpet, or should I say "beige carpet." But that's not his fault, as many other celebrities' looks fell flat against the beige when they relied on red to make the looks pop.

Eva Longoria

I think Longoria's dress couldn't manage to pick a lane. From the sequined silver pattern, the deep v-neck, the long ballon-ish sleeves and the choker, it all did too much for my fashion palette. Oddly enough, the look ultimately fell flat, especially against the champagne carpet. I usually love everything Longoria wears on the carpet, which perhaps is why this one did not please my high expectations.

Rooney Mara

Unfortunately for Mara, just like the other celebrities on the worst-dressed list, matching the carpet made her blend in instead of standing out. With an event as regal as the Oscars, Mara’s Alexander McQueen dress may have been a better fit for another, more toned-down occasion. The high waistline, the mix of material, the tied part of the dress in the back, her slicked-back hair and her simple makeup just seemed like a rushed look without much thought process behind it.

So what do you think? Do these celebrities rightfully deserve their spots on the best and worst-dressed list from the champagne carpet, or do you see things differently?

A few of these looks are more contentious than others, and ultimately fashion and art are subjective. But I think most of us can agree that there were some definitive wins and losses on the beige carpet.
