Rutgers women's soccer bounces back with win over Maryland

The Rutgers women's soccer team bested Maryland yesterday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights (6-5-3, 2-3-1) defeated the Terrapins (3-6-5, 0-5-1) by a score of 1-0 after a late goal in the final 10 minutes of the match.
The game marked the conclusion of a three-game road trip for Rutgers in which it drew with Nebraska and lost to Iowa prior to the victory over Maryland.
Yesterday's game looked like the scoring might get going quickly when freshman forward Ashley Baran fired a shot on goal in the 4th minute. The game marked Baran's first career start, and she nearly made it a memorable one early on. Liz Beardsley made the save, though, to keep the game level.
Approximately halfway through the first half, the Knights lined up for a corner kick, and they nearly found the back of the net again. The corner kick found graduate student back Allison Lynch, who headed the ball toward the top right corner of the net, but Beardsley made another save.
Rutgers controlled the first half but could not put the ball in the back of the net. The Knights led 10-1 in shots and 3-1 in shots on goal heading into halftime. Rutgers also led 8-1 in corner kicks, so it was clear the team was getting good opportunities but just could not capitalize on them.
The second half was much of the same as the Knights continued to put consistent pressure on the Terrapins.
Rutgers led the second half 9-4 in shots and 3-1 in shots on goal.
Despite the constant attack, it wasn't until the 85th minute that the Knights finally broke the scoreless tie. The goal came off the left foot of junior midfielder Kylie Daigle after she was awarded a penalty kick.
After taking the 1-0 lead late in the game, Rutgers fended off Maryland for the closing few minutes and finished with the victory.
The goal marked Daigle's first of the season, and it came in a huge spot. It was nothing new for her, though, as last season, she scored 5 goals while starting in 18 of the team's 19 games.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer tallied two saves in the contest, recording a clean sheet for the seventh time this season.
The Knights will look to build on this victory. They have some work to do in Big Ten play, as they currently sit ninth in the conference standings with 7 points.
Rutgers returns home to Yurcak Field on Busch campus on Thursday to face Michigan. The game will kick off at 6 p.m. and be televised on the Big Ten Network.
